Did you know...

Hornbills are known for their unusual nesting behavior. Once a pair has chosen a suitable nest hole, the female goes inside and both birds use mud, droppings and bits of food to cover the opening. They leave a narrow slit open so that the male can deliver food to the female while she is incubating her eggs. After the eggs hatch, the male will continue to bring food to the nest. When the chicks are old enough to fly, the birds break through the mud covering and leave the nest. Although Sulawesi Red-Knobbed Hornbills often lay two or three eggs, usually only one chick survives.
